It’s an argument as old as the digital stone age, and it rages on in forum threads and comments sections across the interwebs. Everyone insists that their computational preference is the true path to electronic enlightenment. But between Mac and PC, is one really better than the other? Can we finally crown one of them the Supreme Sovereign of Silicon?

Microsoft preceded Apple by about a year and, unlike Apple, has dominated the computer market with phenomenal success essentially since its inception. Becoming famous primarily with Windows 95, Microsoft has a long history of being top dog in the computing world. It’s had its share of mistakes with some of its products (Windows ME, Windows Vista, Windows 8), but that hasn’t stopped them from seeing unprecedented success. Known for machines that can get down to business, computers running a Windows operating system are still the standard for offices both home and corporate across the world today.

Pros of Windows:

Customizable and maintainable—PCs are typically designed so that broken hardware can be replaced, and old hardware can be upgraded

PCs come from a variety of manufacturers, creating a variety of options in areas like price, performance, and appearance

Easy to find an inexpensive option if all you need is a web browser and a word processor

Often, options equal in performance to Macs tend to be cheaper

You can build a PC on your own (or have your techie friend do it)

With available performance options and upgrading capacity, PCs are better than Macs for hardcore gaming

Windows holds the majority share of the market, which means that the majority of software is developed to run on a Windows operating system, rather than Mac

Many PCs on the market have touchscreen capabilities

Mac operating systems tend to be more stable, slicker, and faster-running than Windows

With nearly all of the software developed in-house, Macs encounter much fewer driver issues

Mac computers integrate seamlessly with other Apple tablets and mobile devices

Macs are designed to look sleek and stylish

Macs are almost always more expensive than PCs

Though it’s starting to change, Macs have traditionally lacked the customizability of PCs

Mac designs tend to be less gracious with hard drive/SSD size than PCs

Mac OS-specific software and programs are sometimes more rare in comparison to those designed specifically for Windows

Macs frequently lack the specs for high performance, hardcore gaming

When Macs break, typically the only solution is to send it to the manufacturer or an authorized repair shop, both of which can be expensive

What's the verdict?

In the end, there’s no clear victor in this computing contest. Let me save you som time and share with you what i found right away.

When it comes to the pure utility for the price, the windows laptops wins.

You can generally get windows laptops for much cheaper than a MacBook. Furthermore, the Macbook comes with a bunch of difficulties that needs to be worked through just to run the required apps for your class.

However, if you aren’t worried about the cost of the laptop, there are a few benefits to the MacBook. Being that it’s more stable and less likely to crash, delete all unsaved progress, and take 30 minutes to reboot while in the middle of your exam. Which would be a nightmare scenario.

Mac just works!

When I am using mac books, I find it rare that the whole computer crashes and goes to a black screen and so on…

Unlike with windows that can have a habit of giving a blue screen from time to others, however, this has become increasingly rare.

When you buy accessories to your mac, such as a mouse or a headset, you can for the vast majority of cases just plug it in and have it work immediately without installing third party programs or having to spend any further time on it.

However, you are pretty locked into the Apple ecosystem where you with a laptop running windows can get a larger variety of products for a more competitive price.

It should also be mentioned that mac comes with more and better pre-installed applications, which allows you to get started using the computer faster. Unlike with windows that can’t even open a PowerPoint slide without you getting third party applications.

It is hardly any news that you can get a window laptop for a cheaper price than a MacBook. Even if you were to pick a PC with similar components, it would still be a lot cheaper than the MacBook.

I’m talking around half the cost!

When for instance comparing the Asus 15 to the MacBook air 2020. There is a price difference of more than 500 euro between these computers however, they seem to have very similar components, both having 8 GB RAM, their core also has a similar user rated performance, and they have the same amount of storage space, although the mac does, however, utilize an SSD.

Windows currently have the biggest market share by far with 87.8% of users globally have windows, where only around 9.7% use macOS.

This can sometimes mean that certain applications aren’t available for Mac OS. This is personally my biggest problem with using a MacBook for your education.

In my own experience, this has been a huge problem for the students using a mac at my school. My IT teacher even started his first lesson with us by complaining about what a pain it was going to be for the Mac users.

If you choose to get a MacBook, be aware that it will require you to work a little extra to find substitutes for the applications needed for your classes.

This can be done for the most part. For instance, we used the program called chemsketch for chemistry, at the time this application did not run on Mac, here the mac users had to find something they could use instead. They did end up finding another chemistry drawing program called marvinsketch.

A big portion of this problem might also stem from the fact that the majority of people, including teachers and professors are using windows. Therefore they can often forget to account for students having different operating systems on their computers.

It should also be mentioned that you can switch to a windows operating system while using a MacBook. You have multiple options that will allow you to run windows only apps on a mac. You can dual-boot using apple Boot camp or try running it in a virtual machine within mac OS, You can also try a Windows compatibility layer ex. CrossOver Mac to run the specific programs.

Battery life

An advantage you often find with the MacBooks is their superior battery life. The Mac OS is said to be better optimized for power efficiency, furthermore, the MacBooks on average has quite large batteries for their size. This results in a battery that can last all day long, which is super useful for school since you won’t always be able to sit next to a plug during exams or lectures. In such situations, it is crucial that your laptop doesn’t run out of battery power which some windows laptops have a habit of doing. My personal windows laptop could barely last an hour which made me consistently depend on sitting close to a plug and bring an extension cord with me every day. In contrast to this, the new MacBook air promises 12 hours of battery time, which is more than needed in a typical school day.

It is important to note that the much larger variety available for windows laptops allows for you to find a computer that can compete with the MacBooks when it comes to battery time for instance the Lenovo Chromebook S340 14, promises 10 hours of battery time.

All in all, you can get a computer from both operating systems that satisfy your need for battery time. I recommend paying a lot of attention to this when deciding which to buy as it is super important not to run out of battery in the middle of your maths exam.

Pay extra attention to customer reviews when it comes to battery life as the promised battery time often is measured with the optimal settings.

I have in this post compared features from the MacBook to some of the cheapest and best windows PC’s, which isn’t fair since you always will be able to get a windows laptop that specializes in a certain feature better than the MacBook. The MacBook, however, lives up to a certain standard, for the most part. You can be pretty sure that you will get a long-lasting machine with good battery life, an ok performance, and good looking design.

You can also get a good looking windows laptop that has it all, however, remember looking into what other people say about the computer you are thinking about since it might not perform as good as it should on paper.
